Please Don't Vote Tomorrow

Ladies and Gentleman,

I'd like to take this opportunity to encourage you not to vote tomorrow. I know, in the past I've encouraged you to vote but I've realized that was a mistake. You see the more people who vote, the less my vote is worth. It is in my best interest that you don't vote. So I encourage you to stay at home, it's cold out. Pop some corn. Watch the Kardashians (I hear Kim's getting a bikini wax). Let me make the decisions for you. We'll all be better off, because let's face it, the world would be much happier if we all did things my way.

On Being 45 and a Recovering Self-Hating Geek

A note: I'm only lightly editing this out of fear that I'll either water it down or, worse yet, chicken out of publishing it.

A Thought about Pay Inequality

During the 90's I was a technology manager at Citigroup and Chase. In my time there I hired many folks and about 40% were women. Before anyone screams "discrimination", in the 90's there were fewer women in tech, I would estimate that roughly 25% of the applicant pools were women. Additionally the technology I was working with at the time was from the late 80's, when even fewer women were in tech. Things might not be perfect now, but there have been changes.. anyway, I'm writing about pay inequality. I'm going to tell you why most of the women who worked for me got paid less then men.

I Don't Think I'm Getting a Job at Dropbox

So, I read this post about some Dropbox interview questions and I figured I'd give them a try. I don't think I'm getting a job at Dropbox with my answers..

How does someone function in 2014 in the United States without State Identification?

I have to be honest, every time the concept of voter ID pops up, I get confused. I really don't understand how you live in the United States today without some sort of government issued ID. Although I don't have a Driver's License, I do have a State Issued ID which I find myself pulling out on a regular basis. Here are some examples of commons uses for Government ID the I know about:

Joining the Army of Lovers

OK, confession time... several years ago I was feeling a little depressed on Valentine's Day. I was single and alone and quite frankly when you're single and alone, Valentine's Day sucks. In an effort to get out of my funk, I donned my reddest bowtie, bought a bag of Hershey's Kisses and handed them out randomly to folks I ran into on the street and in the subway. The goal was simple, I wasn't trying to pick up anyone, wasn't looking for a love connection, I just wanted to put a smile on people's faces. Some people have looked at me oddly. Some people ran off.

A simple thought on Boycotting the Olympics

Just a thought... I know people have been saying that the US should have boycotted the Olympics over Russia's treatment of people with alternate lifestyles. Where I agree with the sentiment, whenever I read someone advocating a boycott I see Jesse Owens in my mind's eye and reminded of the 1936 Olympics. I see him sprinting faster and jumping further than German's blond haired, blue eyed team members. I see Adolf Hitler in the stands watching Jesse receive his 4 gold medals and I'm left to wonder... isn't that a far better message then taking your ball and going home?

Housekeeping on

Some of my friends noticed that a couple of weeks ago, I started redirecting traffic from to when they asked me why I promised then I'd write up what I am doing and why in the near future. Here is that post...

Holiday Wishes

No matter what you celebrate may it be the Merriest, Happiest, most Joyous and Blessed one yet. I also wish that the ones to come outshine this year's holidays.

The Target Hack, False Authority Syndrome, Sensationalism and FUD

This morning as I woke, I was listening to the news on the radio discussing the Target Hack. The first thing that was said was that the perpetrators were able to get names, credit card numbers, PINs and other information that's involved with a credit card transaction. The fact that they were able to retrieve PINs fascinated me. You see, when you swipe your card at one of those terminals, the terminal hashes the PIN and sends that to VISA/MC etc to be verified.

Algorithmic URL Shortening for Drupal

Recently I've been thinking about how to make URL shortening a little simpler for Drupal sites (well, my blog but this could apply to any site). You see, in addition to, I own which I bought to use as an URL shortener.

Bittorrent Sync

I may use the terms folder and directory interchangibly. In many respects, they're the same thing.

I've been using Bittorrent Sync a lot recently and am really liking the protocol and I'm finding more and more ways to use it and wanted to let folks in on what I'm doing with it.

Random Thoughts about the Health Care Exchange Website

So I've been holding off on posting on the Healthcare Marketplace, mostly because I don't want the political debate. Speaking as a web developer it's not a huge project. At the end of the day, the marketplace is a shopping cart (give the user the ability to filter products, select one and check out). It's not a new problem, it was solved in 1995 when Amazon launched. On second thought, a travel site is a better example Travelocity launched in 1996. Either way the meme that "this has never been done before" is ridiculous.

What is the signature.asc attachment on my email?

Simply put it's a Digital Signature using the Open PGP standard. There are a number of tools available to decode that signature file using my PGP key to determine if I sent it and if it's been altered

Can We Stop Arming the People who Hate Us?

I have a simple suggestion: Can we stop arming other military groups with anything more powerful then a slingshot?

Some Thoughts on Amending the Constitution

I really look at the Constitution as the owner's manual. I want to know what the government is allowed to do and what it isn't. The founders knew that it should be changeable, which is why there's a process for amending it. If the Constitution seems out of date, it is OUR FAULT for not insisting on the required maintenance.

OK, posting this here so I don't throw spoilers up on FB... also not posting this to the front page of the blog to avoid spoilage. Please comment here to try and keep my FB feed spoiler free....
